Engagement Story #1
My fiancé and I decided to exchange gifts on Christmas Eve. I'm not a huge Christmas fan since I've worked in retail and because my birthday is December 25th; so I didn't really care either way. I gave him his present (tickets to the Eagles/Cowboys game for the Sunday after Christmas) and then he handed me a huge box. Of course there was a box inside of a box, inside of a box. Once I got to the final box, inside it was a hamburger phone. We watched the movie Juno and she has one in the movie and I made the comment that when I was younger I always wanted one. I was completely thrown off by this gift... I didn't even remember saying that I used to want a phone like that!
The next day, Christmas Day, we were going to his mom's house for Christmas dinner and he was making a ham and I was making a casserole. My oven isn't big enough for both to fit, so he decided that he was going to get up at 5 am to put the ham in the oven so it would be done in enough time to put my casserole in afterwards. I hear him get up at 5 and take the dog out and start cooking in the kitchen. Later he comes back upstairs and the next thing I know I hear the dog whining downstairs. I start to freak out as any mother of a "fur baby" would and my fiancé tells me to go check on him. This annoys me since he was the one who was just awake, but I get up to check on him. I stepped on something at the top of the stairs, looked down, and saw that it was a Hershey's Kiss. I looked further down the steps and they were all over the place. My first thought was that my fiancé dropped them and never picked them up. This made me a little upset since there is a dog in the house. I went down the steps, picking the Kisses up as I went. I got to the bottom of the steps and saw that they actually were leading into the kitchen and to the kitchen table. On the table were flowers; the card read, "Happy Birthday" on the front and then on the back read, "Now that I've kissed the ground you walk on and showered you with flowers, will you marry me?." I turned around, very confused and he was down on one knee holding a wrapped box and said, "Will you marry me?" There I was standing there in an oversized T shirt, my glasses, wearing the retainer I wear at night, and my hair a mess. I was so overwhelmed I just freaked out and said YES! I never opened the box and then I started looking for a vase for the flowers. He said, "STOP!" please let's look at the ring! The rest is history!
Engagement Story #2
Justin and I had been dating for about two years, and knew without question that we fully intended on getting married. The only question was, when? Both of us are walking a fine balancing act of Full time work and Full time Nursing School, so planning a wedding just doesn’t fit into that too well! We had both decided an engagement would probably not happen for at least another year. When he asked me how I envisioned our proposal, I always said outside.. in a park.. just the two of us, maybe a few friends around..(remember that!)
Justin is very connected to his Irish and Scottish Heritage, so every year, we attend multiple different Scottish highland games and festivals. One of those festivals is the Ligonier Highland Games, in Ligonier, Pa. Thousands and Thousands of people attend these games every year. This past year, in September of 2008, Just as in years prior, Justin and I made the 3 hour drive to Ligonier to attend. (This weekend also happens to coincide with the anniversary of our first date!) His family is part of a Clan, named Clan Donald, which sponsors the games. He is also the Pennsylvania Deputy Commissioner in this Clan, so when he told me that the Highland Games organizers asked him to give a speech at the games, nothing rang funny. It was the 50th anniversary of the games, so it was kind of a big year. All weekend long, he gave no clue to his anxiousness, never gave a hint of what was to come…
On Saturday of that weekend, we were attending the games. At about 4:30, all of our friends just randomly were disappearing.. some going for food, others to shop, others to visit other people there. Again, I am not questioning this. At about 5:00, Justin and I head over to the Games field, where there is an audience of about 3,000 people. Justin is rehearsing his speech about the games, and the significance of them, and the 50th anniversary. I sit on the sidelines.. playing with the wildflowers.. admittedly spacing off a bit.. and Justin is on the podium giving his speech.
Someone next to me starts poking me, saying “I think he wants you to go up there”. Apaprently, He had mentioned the fact that this was also our anniversary to the crowd, and told them that he had a little anniversary gift he wants to give to me. So I walked out to the field..May I remind you, we are both in school, so a proposal was not anticipated for at LEAST another year.. so this was not even on my mind… I reach Justin in the middle of the field.. where he proceeds to say, with microphone in hand, and 3,000 people watching.. That I complete him, I make him a better person, and He wants nothing more than to share the rest of his life making me happy, and wants nothing more than for me to be his wife.. and he gets down on one knee, presenting a beautiful ring to me. Of course, I said YES!!
So He kept his word.. he DID propose to me in a park… there just happened to be 3,000 other people, including local news cameramen and photographers, there to witness our moment as well!
My vote is this one!
